India gets New ‘Prince of Church’

Pope Benedict XVI, putting his mark on his Church’s future, inducted 22 men on February 18, 2012, including India’s George Alencherry into the exclusive group of Cardinals who will one day elect one of their own to succeed him as leader of the world’s 1.3 billion Roman Catholics.Syro-Malabar Major Archbishop George Alencherry was elevated as a Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican. He is among the 22 prelates who took the Cardinals' traditional oath of loyalty.“Cardinals are entrusted with the service of love: love for God, love for His Church, an absolute and unconditional love for his brothers and sisters, even unto shedding their blood, if necessary (in defence of the faith),” the Pope told the new Cardinals before giving them their rings and red birettas, or hats.“Furthermore, they are asked to serve the Church with love and vigour, with the transparency and wisdom of teachers, with the energy and strength of shepherds, with the fidelity and courage of martyrs,” he said.The new Cardinals are from the United States, Hong Kong, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, India, Canada, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Romania, Belgium, and Malta.Cardinals are the Pope’s closest collaborators in the Vatican and around the world.



ICYM Office Bearers

The National Council of the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) elected office-bearers for the year 2012-2014 at the 32nd National Council meeting at Seva Kendra, Kolkata. Ms Olima Minj of Chhattisgarh was elected the National Youth President and Mr Titu Thomas was elected General Secretary. Mr Savio Vishal Daniel and Ms Shanta Peter were elected Vice Presidents, while Ms Anitha Tirkey and Mr Alison Pereira were appointed Spokespersons. Mr Maisarapu Philip and Ms AshaJyothi Kindo were appointed Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer respectively. Ms Shraddha Kujur, Mr Gilbert D’Cruz, Ms S. Jennifer and Ms Prathibha Nag were appointed Secretaries. The RYD/RYLA representatives elected include: Fr Prakash Nanda, Fr Mari Joseph, Sr Regina Mareen MSMHC and Sr Ushakiran Kujur. Former ICYM National President, Mr Ravi Robin Rounak, was appointed FIMCAP representative for 2013-2016.
